Rizzo's Trying To Prove He Belongs In The Bigs

(WSCR) The connection between Anthony Rizzo and the Cubs' brass is a strong one.

Rizzo was drafted by Theo Epstein and the Red Sox in 2007, then he was traded to the Padres and Jed Hoyer in 2010. Now, again, he was traded to the Cubs in exchanged for Andrew Cashner and Kyung-Min Na.

Still, Rizzo is fighting to prove he belongs on the Cubs opening day roster.

"I'm not too worried about Triple-A," Rizzo told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. "I'm trying to do everything I can to open up everyone's eyes here and have them say that I belong in the big leagues and should be the first baseman."

The 22-year-old's career has been a rather rough one during his first few years in baseball. In 2008, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. After undergoing chemotherapy, Rizzo has been cancer free since 2008.

"It puts a lot of things in perspective," Rizzo said. "My entire life, I've been at the top of my game at every sport I've ever played. Getting the game that I loved most taken away from me put it into perspective. It's just a game. I'm just out here having fun, trying to be a little kid."
