Pit Bulls Maul 3-Year-Old Boy
(CBS) -- A 3-year-old boy was transported Monday to a Chicago hospital after being mauled by two pit bulls, the Chicago Fire Department said.
The attack, which left the child with "multiple puncture wounds," occurred around 5 p.m. at a residence in the 7300 block of South Kingston Avenue, fire officials said.
The South Shore residence is across the street from a firehouse. Fire Capt. Bob Martin said the child had wounds on his ears, neck, nose and legs and is a relative of the woman who owns the dogs.
"Basically all we were informed of is she has two pit bulls and they were tearing up the 3-year-old pretty good," Chicago Fire Department Capt. Bob Martin told reporters near the scene. "We don't know why."
Martin said a neighbor intervened in the attack by jumping over a fence, and probably saved the child's life.
The boy was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, but his wounds do not appear to be life-threatening, department spokesman Larry Langford said.
It wasn't immediately known what became of the pit bulls.
