CHICAGO (CBS)-- A Milwaukee police officer and a robbery suspect were both killed during a chase and shootout overnight.

CBS 58 reported the shooting took place at 14th Street and Cleveland Avenue.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said, around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, officers were looking for a suspect connected to a robbery about two hours earlier, when they found the 19-year-old suspect, who ignored their commands and ran away.

A 37-year-old officer chased the suspect, leading to a struggle. Police said the suspect fired several shots at the officer, who later died at the officer.

The officer also fired at the suspect, who died at the scene. Norman said it's not yet clear if the suspect died from a shot fired by the officer, or if he shot himself.

The officer who was killed had been with the force for four years.

"To the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department, I see you, I am proud of you. The work that you do, does not go unnoticed," Norman said. "Families of our fine, noble, and dedicated men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department, friends of these noble and dedicated men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department, please check on them. Please continue to support them as we try to deal with this unfortunate tragedy."

Police have not released the name of either the officer or the suspect, citing an ongoing investigation.
