Mass Shooting At Madden Video Game Tournament At Jacksonville Landing In Florida
(CBS) -- Police say there were "multiple fatalities" in a shooting Sunday afternoon at a video game tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.
The AP reports the gunman killed two people and wounded nine more before taking his own life.
CBS station WJZ-TV has learned the suspect is from Baltimore, Maryland.
Multiple law enforcement agencies in Jacksonville and Baltimore are working together to learn more information about the shooter.
Jacksonville authorities warned the public to stay away from the Jacksonville Landing. That's a popular downtown dining and entertainment area.
Police confirmed the lone suspect is dead at the scene. SWAT teams searched the area and moved people who were hiding in locked areas after the shooting to safety.
GLHF Game Bar in Jacksonville Landing was hosting a rtournament for players of EA's Madden 19 on Sunday, according to a schedule posted two days ago on the EA Sports website.
Gunshots can be heard in recordings from the tournament on the bar's Twitch account, which was streaming the competition.
Malik Brunson said he was at a nearby Hooters restaurant when the shooting occurred.
"All I heard was he got a gun and the shooting started. One of the man ran into Hooters with the shot wounds, they locked us in the restaurant," he said in a social media message.
Ryan Alemon, who came from Texas to participate in the gaming tournament, said he ducked down and ran toward the restroom when he heard the gunshots. He stayed there for about 10 minutes.
"I'm still shocked, I can hardly talk," he said.
Drini Gjoka, who was competing in the event, tweeted about the shooting in the immediate aftermath. "The tourney just got shot up. Im leavinng and never coming back," he wrote at 1:37 p.m. Four minutes later, he added that a bullet struck him in the thumb, and later called Sunday the "worst day of my life."
"I will never take anything for granted ever again. Life can be cut short in a second," he said.
