A man surrendered to police after a standoff in the north Chicago suburb of Deerfield on Wednesday.

At 11:55 a.m., Deerfield police were called to the 400 block of Deerfield Road to check on the wellbeing of someone who lived there. When police arrived, the man made threatening comments and went into his home, police said.

Due to the comments and the likely presence of weapons, police called in other law enforcement agencies and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team.

The scene and the surrounding area were secured until the man, who was experiencing a mental health episode, surrendered to police around 2:40 p.m., police said.

He was subsequently taken to a local hospital, police said.
