1 killed, 2 injured when freight train hits pickup truck in Elgin, Illinois
One person was killed and two others were injured when a freight train collided with a landscaping truck Thursday morning in Elgin in Chicago's northwest suburbs.
Police said, around 6:30 a.m., a Union Pacific train hit a vehicle at the railroad crossing at State and Locust streets in Elgin.
A passenger in the truck was killed. The driver and another passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment, but their conditions were not available.
Cornerstone Partners, a landscaping company based in Elgin, confirmed the death of an employee, and said two other workers were receiving medical care.
"We are profoundly saddened and heartbroken by the tragedy that occurred today involving our crew. The entire Cornerstone Partners family is trying to process this horrific incident," the company said in a statement. "At this moment, our absolute focus is on supporting the families and employees impacted by providing all necessary resources."
A Union Pacific spokesperson said the train crew was not injured.
Police said temporary stop signs would be installed at the railroad crossing until the investigation into the crash is completed, including any necessary inspections by Union Pacific.
Union Pacific also will implement a "stop and protect protocol," requiring train conductors to visually verify that all traffic is stopped before a train proceeds through that crossing.
