Family Escapes Back Of The Yards Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A family escaped unharmed from a large house fire in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Saturday.

Heavy fire spread through the first and second floors of a 2-1/2 story home at 4839 S. Wood St. starting at about 9 a.m. Saturday, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis.

Curtis said a family of at least five was inside the house, but had gotten out by the time firefighters arrived. The blaze raced through the first and second floors of the brick house, and initially crews were worried it might spread to a house next door, but it did not.

"Everything went smoothly, it was brought under control quickly,'' Curtis said.

The alarm was canceled at 9:30 a.m.

No one was hurt or rescued, but the family is going to be displaced. As of 9:45 a.m. their neighbors were assisting them, Curtis said.

The Office of Fire Investigation was looking into the cause and remains on the scene.
