Slowly warming temperatures this weekend for Chicago after brief deep freeze

CHICAGO (CBS) —  While the temporary deep freeze in Chicago will be coming to an end on Friday, temperatures will still be frigid Thursday night as overnight lows drop into the single digits. 

Even though the winds will be lighter, it'll feel like temperatures are near 0 degrees at times along with a mostly clear sky.

Friday temperatures won't be as cold, with highs reaching the upper 20s to around 30 degrees by the afternoon. 

Clouds will increase on Friday, giving Chicago a cloudy sky Saturday morning, then during dinner-time rain will start to push in towards Chicago.

Rain will be widespread overnight with rain showers lingering into our Sunday morning. This weekend warmer temperatures return with highs in the 40s.

Chicago warming centers are open

More than 300 public facilities that serve as warm indoor spaces are also available during extreme cold. The city's five community service centers, which double as warming centers in the extreme cold, are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Englewood Community Service Center - 1140 West 79th Street
  • Garfield Community Service Center - 10 South Kedzie Avenue
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Community Service Center - 4314 South Cottage Grove (North Area Community Service Center - 845 West Wilson Avenue
  • South Chicago Community Service Center - 8650 South Commercial Avenue
  • Trina Davila Community Service Center - 4312 West North Avenue

The community centers are not available as warming centers 24/7. Those needing a warm place to stay overnight can call 311 for help.

Chicago Public Library locations and Chicago Park District locations are also open as warming centers during normal hours of operation, and Chicago Police District stations also can be used as warming centers.

Chicago residents can sign up for NotifyChicago alerts here. Text messages and e-mail alerts are sent out for incidents like severe weather.

City officials recommend calling 311 to request a shelter placement, to request a well-being check for seniors, or to report issues with heat in residential buildings.   

Warming center hours may be extended depending on extreme conditions. CBS News Chicago meteorologists will continue to monitor forecasts and provide updates.
