Road Rage Shooting Leads To Crash In Jefferson Park

Updated 03/22/13 - 3:46 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were hospitalized Friday, after a road rage shooting in the Portage Park neighborhood led to a two-vehicle crash a couple miles away in the Jefferson Park neighborhood.

Police said a 37-year-old man was shot in the back around 5:40 a.m., in an apparent act of road rage near Lavergne and Sunnyside Avenues. Police said two people in a Cadillac Escalade had stopped at a home near Lavergne and Sunnyside when someone in a Mercedes SUV opened fire on them, wounding a passenger.

The gunshots "were pretty loud. I live very close by, so I was scared," said Jenny Gattone.

The Mercedes drove off and the driver of the Cadillac gave chase, following the Mercedes to the intersection of Foster and Nagle Avenues, where the Mercedes crashed into a Toyota minivan, police said.

"The ran a red light," said the minivan's driver, who did not want to give his name. "All the airbags went off, I didn't see them flee."

The people inside the Mercedes got out of the vehicle and ran away. The people in the Cadillac continued driving a short distance before pulling over and calling 911.

The man who was shot was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The driver of the Cadillac was taken to Resurrection Medical Center for minor injuries.

Police said two guns were recovered from the Mercedes, but no suspects were in custody early Friday afternoon.
