Chicago weekend shootings: 2 killed, 39 others hurt

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least two people were killed and 39 others were hurt in weekend shootings across Chicago as of Sunday. The ages of the victims range from 15 to 61.

In the first shooting of the weekend, a 43-year-old man was killed in the Washington Heights neighborhood. Police said around 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 10200 block of South Carpenter Street, the victim was in the alley when he was shot in the head and chest. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. 

Early Saturday morning officers on a routine patrol saw a man shooting in the intersection of the street near the 2300 block of South Sacramento Avenue. Officers say around 12:56 a.m., they exited their vehicle and immediately arrested the suspected shooter and recovered a rifle and handgun at the scene. 

Officers then heard more gunshots fired at or near them and took cover. No one was hurt, and officers did not return fire. Area Four detectives are investigating. 

Then on Saturday afternoon, four people were injured in a mass shooting on the city's North Side, in the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue around 12:32 p.m., the four victims were approached by at least two armed shooters. 

A 26-year-old woman was struck in the face and transported to St. Francis Hospital. A 28-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder and head and was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital. A 43-year-old man was struck in the shoulder and head and was transported to St. Francis Medical Center. A 61-year-old woman was struck in the leg and transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

All of the victims were initially reported in good condition. 

Just a short time later, two teenagers were shot in the 9400 block of South Lafayette Avenue. Police say around 1:38 p.m., a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were approached by an unknown person who started shooting. The 15-year-old was struck in the leg and transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital. The 16-year-old was struck in the hand and was transported to Little Company of Mary as well. Both were initially reported in good condition.

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

  • At 12:54 a.m. Saturday in the 6400 block of South Carpenter Street, a 52-year-old woman was arguing with a 44-year-old man inside a home when she got out a gun and shot him. The man was struck in the hip and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. Police arrested the woman and recovered a handgun, and the investigation continues. 
  • At 1:14 a.m. Saturday, in the 5900 block of South Talman Avenue, officers responded to a call of a person shot to discover a 24-year-old man on the ground bleeding from the leg. He had been shot in the left thigh and was transported to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition. However, the victim was uncooperative with officers and refused to answer any questions. 
  • At 4:28 a.m. Saturday in the 7600 block of South Lowe Avenue, a 25-year-old man was found bleeding on the floor of a hallway in a home. A female witness told police that a known offender ran out of the home after the shooting. The victim was shot in the chest and left arm and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. 
  • At 10:46 a.m. Saturday, in the 1500 block of East 74th Street, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were shot when an unknown group of people started shooting in their direction. The man suffered a graze wound and refused EMS. The woman was pronounced dead by EMS at a local hospital. 
  • At 11:44 a.m. Saturday in the 7200 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, an 18-year-old man was shot multiple times by an unknown person and self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital. He was then transported to Stroger Hospital. 
  • At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, in the 7000 block of South Cottage Grove, a man, 24, and a woman, 28, were near the sidewalk when they were approached by a vehicle. At least one occupant from within the vehicle produced a handgun and fired shots. The man was struck in the thigh and the woman suffered a graze wound to the rear. Both victims were taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. Chicago Police officers located the offending vehicle in the area of the 5400 block of South State Street. Responding officers were involved in a traffic crash which required CFD assistance to extract officers from their police vehicles. Four officers were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Four offenders were taken into custody and two handguns were recovered. Charges are pending. 
  • At 6:47 p.m. Saturday, in the 4600 block of South Karlov Avenue, a man, 22, was struck in the leg by gunfire and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 8:27 p.m. Saturday, in the 200 block of East 130th Street, a man, 35, and a woman, 36, were inside a vehicle when an occupant of a dark-in-color vehicle produced a handgun and fired shots. The man was struck in the arm and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. The woman was struck in the hand and was taken to Roseland Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 8:18 p.m. Saturday, in the 300 block of East 47th Street, a man, 30, was walking on the sidewalk when a known male approached with a gun and fired multiple shots at the victim. The victim suffered three gunshot wounds to the left thigh and was taken to U of C in good condition.
  • At 11:23 p.m. Saturday, in the 1300 block of North Long Avenue, a man, 28, was in a dispute with an unknown male offender in the alley when both subjects produced handguns and exchanged gunfire. The offender fled the scene, and it is unknown at this time if he suffered any injuries. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg and arm and was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition. The victim was very uncooperative and refused to answer questions about the incident. Officers did recover his weapon.
  • At 6:50 p.m. Saturday, in the 6700 block of South Parnell Avenue, a 52-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when a dark sedan approached, and an unknown offender fired shots. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm and was transported to U of C in good condition.
  • At 12:09 a.m. Sunday, in the 1600 block of South Karlov Avenue, officers responded to a shots fired call and found a 17-year-old girl standing outside with a gunshot wound to the back and was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. The victim stated that two black vehicles drove on the block and someone inside fired shots in her direction. 
  • At 12:09 a.m. Sunday, in the 1300 block of South Homan Avenue, a woman, 23, was standing outside smoking when she observed an unknown male begin to shoot in her direction. The victim suffered three graze wounds to the left arm and was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. 
  • At 1:50 a.m. Sunday, in the 1700 block of West 86th Street, a 33-year-old man was in a fight with a 52-year-old woman inside a residence when he produced a handgun. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition. During the struggle, the victim gained control of the handgun and shot the offender in the chest and back and he was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition. 
  • At 1:35 a.m. Sunday, in the 0-100 block of East Garfield Boulevard, officers responded to a shots fired call and found two women, 21 and 25, on the sidewalk. The 21-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the left calf and was taken to U of C in good condition. The 25-year-old suffered a graze wound to the head and was also taken to U of C in good condition. Witnesses stated that they observed two unknown males in the street in an exchange of gunfire and then fled the scene in an unknown direction.
  • At 3:16 a.m. Sunday, in the 3400 block of West Foster Avenue, a man, 29, was in an argument on the street with an unknown male offender who produced a handgun and fired gunshots. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. 
  • At 2:38 a.m. Sunday, in the 300 block of West Erie Street, a group of individuals were fighting outside when an exchange of gunfire ensued, striking the victims. Five victims were taken to Northwestern Hospital. An unidentified male adult suffered a gunshot wound to his head and is in critical condition. Another unaged man suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and is in critical condition. The third victim, a 27-year-old woman, suffered a gunshot wound to her foot and is in good condition. The fourth victim, a 25-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body and is in good condition. A 27-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds throughout the body and his condition was stabilized according to police. Three other victims were taken to Stroger. A 23-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her foot and was listed in good condition. A 32-year-old man was shot throughout the body and is in critical condition. The eighth victim, a 43-year-old woman was shot in her abdomen and is in critical condition.
  • At 4 a.m. Sunday, in the 6700 block of West Medill Avenue, two men, 24 and 26, were struck by gunfire and taken to Loyola Hospital. The 24-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to his left arm and the 26-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg. Both are in good condition. No one is in custody and Area Five Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. 
  • At 3:55 p.m. Sunday in the 0-100 block of West 71st Street, a 17-year-old boy what shot in the arm and self transported to St. Bernard Hospital where he was reportedly in good condition. 
  • At 4:53 p.m. Sunday in the 7000 block of South Lafayette, a 17-year-old boy was near the sidewalk when he was shot in the abdomen. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center wher ehe was initially repored in good condition. 
  • At 5:50 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of East 133rd Place, a 30-year-old man was shot in the chest. He self-transported to Ingalls Hospital where he was initially reported in critical condition. A person of interest was taken in for questioning and a weapon was discovered on the scene.
