Chicago drive-by shooting outside Near North Side bar injures 4; alderman calls for bar to close

Four people were hurt in a drive-by shooting overnight outside a bar in the Near North Side, Chicago police said.

Police said just before 3:50 a.m., a gray Acura drove up the 1100 block of North Dearborn Street and someone inside opened fire on people standing on the sidewalk.

CBS News crews saw at least 30 shell casings on the scene near Division and Dearborn streets.

Police said a 22-year-old woman was shot in the leg, a 60-year-old man was also shot in the leg, a 45-year-old man was shot in the foot and a 24-year-old man was shot in the forearm. All were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

The Acura drove away south on Deaborn Street.

Second Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins is pushing police to close the bar, Gold Coast Social, where he said the incident started.

"I have requested a summary closure. I've already been in touch with Superintendent Snelling's office to let him know that this written request would be forthcoming," Hopkins said.

He said he has had problems with Gold Coast Social in the past.

"It's a problem on Division Street, and the video evidence that we've seen this morning shows that at least one of the victims who was shot was present in that bar and may have been involved in some of the confrontations that happened there," Hopkins said.

Neighborhood residents echoed the alderman's claims.

"I just noticed over the years that there's a lot of problems over there. There's been shootings there before," said resident John Burrow.

But the owner of Gold Coast Social doesn't believe the shooting originated from his bar or had anything to do with his establishment. He also said violence in Chicago is a real issue, and sometimes it's impossible to stop random acts of violence. The owner said they are cooperating fully with the police investigation.

CBS News Chicago found out Gold Coast Social was previously called PLAY Kitchen and Cocktails, and had the same owner. In 2021, the building was hit by gunfire, its window and TV smashed. And in 2019, the signed liquor license plan of operations for PLAY mandated additional security.

"I don't see these problems at any of the other bars out here. It just seems that it's coming from there," Burrow said.

CBS News Chicago asked the owner of Gold Coast Social about these allegations and problems under their previous name, and he said their operational model has been different since then.

"We scan IDs at the door, we follow out plan operation and take every measures and additional measures. We do strong screening to our customers and had zero issue past 3 years," the owner said in a statement. "Make sure we as a venue take 'Gangs are un-welcome' stance along with many additional operational procedures."

He called the shooting a random act of violence.

An investigation by Area Three Detectives is ongoing. No one is in custody.
