Chicago Police Have Received 406 Tips Since Launching Looting Task Force
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Chicago Police have received 406 tips since launching a task force to identify those who were involved in an all-night looting spree during the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 10.
CPD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said the Looting Task Force has released 67 videos and has made 74 felony arrests.
Among them was Victor Doss, 26, who was charged recently with three counts of felony looting and burglary. Police said Doss used a hammer to break the windows at three stores in the 900 block of North Michigan Avenue on the Magnificent Mile that early Monday morning, and dozens of others then swarmed into those stores and looted them.
In addition to the Magnificent Mile, the looting also took place in the Loop, South Loop, Streeterville, River North, Clybourn Corridor, and Lincoln Park.
Police Supt. David Brown emphasized that the partnership between police and the public is crucial in bringing those involved in the looting to justice.
"People in Chicago are our eyes and ears," Brown said. "Working together, we can rebuild that sense of safety that has been shaken."
Police are also looking for vehicles involved in the looting, Deenihan said. A total of 26 have already been seized.
Police recently released still photos of the looters in the 100 block of North Wells Street on August 10. Several people in the photos are carrying stolen merchandise just before 3 a.m.
