Animal Control Worker Seriously Injured In Pit Bull Attack

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A review was underway to determine how a stray pit bull that had been scheduled to be euthanized was able to maul and seriously injure an Animal Care and Control worker Saturday morning.

The injured employee, a 47-year-old woman, was attacked at the city's kennel facility in the Little Village neighborhood and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she remained Sunday evening. Details on her injuries and condition were not available.he dog, a mixed-breed pit bull, was euthanized. The dog, which was brought to the facility by a resident, "was not being held as a dangerous animal," according a statement issued by Animal Care and Control.

It was being housed at the facility during "the five-day stray holding period that allows owners to reclaim lost pets," the statement said.

Emergency workers were called to facility in the 2700 block of South Western following the attack just after 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez.

"The dog had been scheduled to be euthanized. It wasn't euthanized because of this," said city spokesman Bill McCaffrey, who could provide no additional details.
