6 Dead, At Least 13 Wounded In Weekend Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Six people are dead and at least 13 others were wounded – including a Chicago Police officer – in violent acts across the city over the weekend.

In the earliest incident, an 18-year-old man was shot in the South Austin neighborhood, and died several hours later.

Ewonte Butler, 18, of the 500 block of North Laramie Avenue, was pronounced dead at 1:53 a.m. at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The shooting happened about 7:13 p.m. in the 5400 block of West Washington Boulevard, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.

Butler was shot twice in the back, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. He was standing on the street when someone opened fire, striking him in the back, Alfaro said.

Then about 2:40 a.m. Saturday, 22-year-old Cory King was riding a bike on the 3100 block of West 81st Street when a light-colored SUV drove by and someone inside fired shots, striking him in the back, police said.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 3:25 a.m.

Later Saturday morning, a Southwest Side man was fatally shot in the Brighton Park neighborhood.

About 8:10 a.m., several people heard multiple shots fired at the mouth of an alley in the 2600 block of West Montgomery Avenue, then saw a vehicle fleeing, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

When officers arrived, they found the body of Jose Curvas-Guezare, 26, lying in the 4100 block of South Rockwell Street -- about a block away.

Curras-Guezare, of the 4600 block of South Sacramento Avenue, was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Another man was shot and killed in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday evening.

Police responded to a call of a person shot about 5:15 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Ridgeland Avenue and found 32-year-old Daniel Johnson lying facedown in the gangway next to an apartment building, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6 p.m.

On Sunday just after midnight, police responded to a call of a person shot in the South Side's Hamilton Park neighborhood, and found a 26-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in a vacant lot in the 5900 block of South Union Avenue, according to police News Affairs.

Kenny Garner, 26, of the 100 block of West 112th Street, was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. at Saint Bernard Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

On Sunday night, a man died after being shot in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The 25-year-old man was shot in the back about 9:20 p.m. in the 6800 block of South Wood Street, said police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien, citing preliminary information.

The man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

Cornelius Jordan, 25, who lived on the block where he was shot, was pronounced dead at 10:04 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The 43-year-old police officer who was shot over the weekend had been investigating a robbery in the 100 block of West 80th Street around 2:15 p.m. Sunday.

The officer followed the vehicle all the way to 47th and LaSalle streets while maintaining contact with the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications, the statement said.

Somebody inside the vehicle fired shots at the officer at that location and the officer returned fire, the statement said.

The officer suffered a graze wound to the side, the statement said. The gunman fled the scene.

One high-ranking officer told CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine that the officer was "better than you and me."

In other shootings since Friday night:

*Three teens were shot in the Humboldt Park area early Saturday morning.

The teens were standing on the sidewalk about 1:52 a.m. in the 900 block of North Harding Avenue when a male shot at them from an alley, grazing a 19-year-old man's shoulder and an 18-year-old man's arm and hitting a 15-year-old boy in the chest, a report from police News Affairs said.

Harrison District police Lt. John Doherty said the teens had been arguing with some people earlier in the evening, one of whom apparently found them later and shot at them.

The two teens that were grazed were taken to Norwegian-American Hospital in good condition, while the 15-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police News Affairs said.

*Another man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood early Saturday.

The 44-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 5700 block of South Halsted Street about 12:12 a.m. when he heard shots and was then hit in the abdomen and wrist, police said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition, police said.

* Two young men were wounded in a Saturday afternoon shooting in the Marquette Park neighborhood.

The 18-year-old men were shot just after 2 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Homan Avenue, said police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien, citing preliminary information.

One man was shot in the leg and back and taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The other man was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital.

* A 21-year-old man was struck in the arm when shots were fired from a passing vehicle about 2:30 a.m. Saturday on the 2300 block of North Long Avenue. He was taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center in good condition.

* A 20-year-old man was shot in the upper arm about 4 a.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, in "stable" condition.

* A 20-year-old man was wounded late Saturday in a drive-by shooting in the Pilsen neighborhood. The victim was walking on the sidewalk on the 2200 block of South Paulina Street about 11:10 p.m. when a light-colored SUV drove by and someone fired shots, police said.

The man was struck in the lower back, the report said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said.

* Two males, one of them 14 years old, were wounded in a shooting on the West Side late Saturday. The shooting happened about 11:50 p.m. on the 4400 block of West Walton Street, police said.

Two males were walking on the sidewalk when shots were fired by an unknown person, police said. The 14-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the left ankle. The other victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh. Both victims were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they were in good condition, police said.

* A man was shot while riding in a car in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood early Sunday morning.

The 23-year-old man was riding in a car about 2 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Avers Avenue when someone fired into the car, hitting him in the upper right thigh and abdomen, police said. The car's driver took him to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
