2 Dead, 15 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man and a 14-year-old boy were killed and 15 people were wounded — including an 11-year-old girl shot on her front porch — in gun violence throughout the city over the weekend.

Telkia Burns was fatally shot about 3:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon during a robbery near his South Chicago neighborhood home, authorities said. The 33-year-old Burns was in the vestibule of a building in the 2900 block of East 91st Street when the robber walked up, pulled out a gun and demanded Burns' belongings, police said.

In a scuffle that followed, Burns, who lived nearby in the 9100 block of South Commercial Avenue, was shot in the head, police said. He died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 4:05 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Charges are pending against an 18-year-old man who is suspected of pulling the trigger, police said.

Also Sunday, 14-year-old Lavander Hearnes was shot in the 4000 block of West Wilcox, about a block from a Chicago Public Schools "Safe Passage" route, about 12:20 a.m., authorities said. He was standing outside with a group of people when shots rang out, police said. He was taken in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his chest to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 9:04 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

In the most recent non-fatal shooting, a man was wounded along a Chicago Public Schools' "Safe Passage" route on the West Side about 11:35 p.m. Sunday night, police said. The man, 28, was walking in the 1400 block of South Tripp Avenue when he "heard shots and felt pain," police said. He was shot in the neck and suffered a graze wound to the back. The was listed in "guarded" condition early Monday at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

At least 14 other people were injured in shootings since Friday, including:

◆ A man was wounded in a shooting shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday night in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side. He was shot in the leg in the 600 block of East 62nd Street, police said.

◆ A 37-year-old man walked into St. Bernard Hospital about 5:50 a.m. Sunday after he was shot in the 9500 block of South State Street in the Roseland neighborhood, police said. He was shot in the right shoulder and left arm, police said.

◆ Three men were shot at 5:30 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of South Green Street on the Near West Side, police said. A 22-year-old man was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in the right side of his torso, police said. A 20-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. A 21-year-old man was listed in good condition after driving himself to Mercy Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left forearm.

◆ A 53-year-old man was shot at 11:20 p.m. Saturday in the 4500 block of South McDowell in Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger hospital with a gunshot wound to the left side of his torso.

◆ An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 6400 block of South Martin Luther King Drive around 4 p.m. Saturday, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said.

◆ Just minutes earlier, a 29-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were shot in the 7800 block of South Langley in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. The 29-year-old was shot in the stomach and the 22-year-old was shot in the leg, police said. Both were taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
