Wynn Resorts Considers Sponsoring Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

BOSTON (CBS) - Did we just witness the last Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular?  That's what many fans and the man who started it all are wondering the day after the Fourth of July.

WBZ has learned that while no one has signed on yet, Wynn Resorts may be considering taking on the event.

David Mugar, the Boston philanthropist who spearheads and funds the annual event is retiring. He told WBZ he has not found anyone to pick up sponsorship next year.

"It's really hard to imagine it not happening but it's a real possibility," he told Lisa Hughes.

Mugar said he's reached out to about a thousand companies but no one has committed to carrying on the tradition.

"We'll just have to wait and see what happens," he said. "We've done about everything we can do."

The source tells WBZ that Wynn Resorts has had serious talks about taking over at the fireworks spectacular. They are currently waiting for their dispute with Somerville over environmental permits to be resolved. They won't talk about sponsoring next year until that happens.

Representatives of Wynn were at Sunday night's rehearsal getting a back stage behind the scenes tour.

Another prominent name that's been speculated about is GE which is moving its corporate headquarters to Boston. But a source tells WBZ's Lauren Leamanczyk that isn't likely. GE is focusing their charitable dollars on education.

Governor Charlie Baker says he is confident the fireworks and the Pops concert will go on next year. He says the state will actively market it to potential sponsors.

And the Pops themselves also expressed hope that this year's 4th of July show won't be their last.
