World Cup Champs! Fans Celebrate USWNT Win At Boston City Hall Plaza Watch Party

BOSTON (CBS) – Fans in Boston and around the country celebrated as the United States Women's National Team defeated the Netherlands, 2-0, to win the 2019 Women's World Cup.

Hundreds of fans sporting red, white and blue celebrated on Boston City Hall plaza Sunday morning during a watch party. The city set up a projection screen to allow soccer fans to come together for the big game.

"It's such a sports city and seeing all these sports fanatics coming out and being able to be a part of it, it's a lot of fun," said fan Jenna Scheeland.

After a scoreless first half, Megan Rapinoe opened the scoring in the 62nd minute as she connected on a penalty kick to give the United States the 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Rose Lavelle tallied a goal of her own and the U.S. cruised to victory.

Soccer fan Emily Marte said, "This is so exciting. It's a huge moment for women in general, especially in sports, to show that yeah, we can show up and also defend the title. This is just for them and for me, I'm just so excited!"

Shayna Lewis added, "Women in sports is continuing to grow and grow. It just makes me very excited and proud to be a part of that."

Before the game, New England professional teams shared their support for the team on Twitter.

This marked the second straight World Cup title and fourth overall for the USWNT.

Young fan Camila Restrepo explained, "It's an example that anything is possible. So you can do everything."
