Wally The Green Monster Costume Recovered After Reported Theft From Fenway

BOSTON (CBS) - Boston police recovered a Wally The Green Monster costume Friday after reporting it had been stolen from Fenway Park an hour-and-a-half earlier.

Officers say the initial call for a theft came in around 2:30 p.m.

Officers say the person who took the costume is a Red Sox employee who "neglected to inform the proper supervisor."

The Red Sox told WBZ-TV that the employee set out with the intention of spreading good cheer throughout Boston.

That employee left the ballpark wearing the costume. When security realized the suit was missing, it sett off a search.

The mascot was spotted by a number of people wandering down Boylston Street, posing for pictures, and even stopping in the Apple store.

Police are not immediately saying where Wally was recovered. They did say in a statement that "no one is under arrest and Wally the Green Monster is safe."

After the costume was located, Boston Police also had a little fun with the whole ordeal in a news release.

"The monster is well known to police and is usually friendly in the monster's habitat of Fenway Park. Officers checked any and all establishments the monster is known to frequent," the statement read in part.

Wally has been the Red Sox mascot since 1997.
