Crews Continue To Fight Massive Brush Fire Near Joint Base Cape Cod

SANDWICH (CBS) – Emergency crews entered their second day fighting back a massive brush fire near Joint Base Cape Cod.

Officials say lightning sparked the wildlands brush fire on Army National Guard Training Site Camp Edwards.

Sandwich firefighters and the Department of Conservation and Recreation called for assistance around 10 a.m. on Saturday as the fire began to spread.

Military helicopters joined the Massachusetts State Police Airwing on Sunday to drop water on the fire.

The fire has consumed approximately 148 acres of the training area, according to the Massachusetts National Guard. Wind carrying smoke has caused visibility issues along Route 6.

No private property has been threatened by the fire.
