DOVER - Dover-Sherborn High School was open to students and faculty Monday to help them cope with the sudden and tragic loss of 17-year-old Sadie Mauro.

Mauro was killed Friday night in a boat crash in Dennis, just weeks before she was about to start her senior year.

"You're looking at pictures of her holding up the MIAA trophy and the next morning you're hearing about her passing. So I think it's that part that is shocking and just so tragic and so sad. I feel for the family and I feel for her good friends," Principal John Smith told reporters Monday. "It was an honor to know her and to learn about her and watch her perform."

"She would do anything for you. She would run through a wall for you if you asked her to. She was just so coachable, loved lacrosse, loved his team," said athletic director Emily Sullivan.

Mauro had verbally committed to play lacrosse for Gettysburg College in 2024. Women's lacrosse coach Charlotte Cunningham said they were "heartbroken" by her death.

"Sadie was an exceptional student, athlete, and person who we were thrilled to have join our program. This has been an unimaginable loss, and our team and the Gettysburg community is keeping Sadie's family and friends in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of a daughter, sister, teammate, and friend," Cunningham said in a statement Monday.

Five other people were with Mauro on the boat when it crashed into a jetty in Sesuit Harbor in Dennis. State Police said a teenage boy was also taken to Cape Cod Hospital with a head injury.

The high school library was open Monday morning for students and faculty to gather and meet with counselors.

"It's devastating. I found out when I was traveling up to New Hampshire this weekend. It just puts that pit in your stomach. I have kids myself who have grown up and I just can't even imagine as a parent somebody's life being cut short," Smith said.
