Report: Bobby Valentine Writing Book About Red Sox, Leadership
BOSTON (CBS) -- Going from being the manager of one of the most popular sports franchises in the country to living a life out of the spotlight is going to take some adjusting for Bobby Valentine. And apparently, he's not quite ready to stay out of the public eye completely.
The former Red Sox manager will write a book, which will be released in 2014, according to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.
It will be the second book by a former Red Sox manager in as many years, as Terry Francona released a book of his own last month.
While Cafardo reports that the book will "include a section on Valentine's one year managing in Boston," the most humorous part is the book's main topic: leadership.
Leadership didn't seem to be Valentine's strong suit during his brief tenure in Boston. He immediately clashed with several Red Sox players upon joining the team, most notably with Kevin Youkilis, who ended up getting traded away in June. The Red Sox clubhouse crumbled around Valentine, with the team reportedly holding a meeting in July to express with ownership their displeasure with their manager.
Valentine also threw his coaching staff under the bus in an interview after the season ended. In that same interview, he told Bob Costas that the media invented a story about a dugout exchange with Will Middlebrooks, even though it was Valentine who first told that story publicly.
Under Valentine's leadership, the Red Sox finished the season with their worst record since 1965, losing 21 games more than they did the previous season.
