Red Sox Place Joe Kelly On 15-Day Disabled List

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox have placed Joe Kelly on the disabled list, one day after he left his start against the Tampa Bay Rays with a right shoulder impongement.

Kelly threw just 23 pitches on Tuesday, walking two batters before striking out Corey Dickerson. He threw three straight balls to the Rays' DH to start the at-bat, prompting a visit from pitching coach Carl Willis, but then struck him out on three straight fastballs.

After the final pitch of that punch out, Kelly was taken out of the game.

"It was typical soreness leading up to the start," he told reporters after the game. "I thought I was going to be good to go and went out there and tried to step on the gas, and nothing came out. I was trying to push through the whole time, even when the medical staff and John came out. I was trying to push through it, and ultimately, they made a decision to take me out of the ballgame."

It was just the third start of the season for Kelly, who is now 1-0 with a 9.35 ERA after pitching just 8.2 innings in 2016.

Right-handed reliever Noe Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Kelly's spot on the roster, but expect another move to bring up a starter before Kelly's next scheduled start Sunday night in Houston.
