Operation, Rubik's Cube Among Finalists For Toy Hall Of Fame

BOSTON (CBS) -- It's American Girl dolls vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, little green army men against Hess Toy Trucks, and Rubik's Cube taking on My Little Pony in a bid to receive one of the highest honors bestowed to toys.

Those toys and six other playthings are vying for two slots in The Strong's National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York. The finalists range from games like "Operation" to the long yellow Slip 'N Slide. And some didn't set out to be toys but are household items re-imagined for more fun uses, like pots and pans.

The Hall of Fame says it has received thousands of nominations this year and two worthy toys will be chosen by a national selection committee to be enshrined on November 6.

The selection committee considers how iconic the toy is, whether it's beloved by multiple generations, how much it encourages learning and creativity, and how innovative the toy was.
