Online Dating Valentines

BOSTON (CBS) - This is big business. Over $2 Billion a year is spent looking for a date or a mate. This is just for the dating services, and then add in the actual costs of the date. There are over 40 million singles looking for each other.

In doing some research I found several websites that rank the dating sites so I didn't have to. First one, the Top 10 Dating Sites. The second, the Top 5 Dating Sites by Consumer-rankings.

The top four listings on both sites were the same, just in a different order. Zoosk.com was new to me and ranked number one or two. It says it has over 50 million subscribers worldwide. That's a lot of singles.

Match.com also ranked number one on one site and number two on the other. Match.com has been around for a while and I know several couples now married who met on this site. My son met his wife using this site, as did several of his friends. So I guess I have them to thank for my granddaughter! They claim to have a new algorithm, which uses a variety of factors to suggest possible mates.

Ranked next was eHarmony ranking 3rd on one site and fifth on the other. They claim to be responsible for over 500,000 weddings. You will need to fill out a lengthy questionnaire and I do believe if everyone was honest in filling out the questionnaire there would be even more marriages. But people tend to embellish when writing about themselves.

Next was Chemistry.com, which ranked 3rd or fourth. It is an offshoot of Match.com and much like eHarmony in that you take a test to see whom you would have chemistry with. They claim to be a safe site with no one getting access to the site unless they are a member.

Perfectmatch.com also uses a profile compatibility test to find your soul mate. It ranked fifth in the best 5 dating sites. It appears to have an expanded base where you can narrow down your search.

Then we have Spark Networks which is a group of targeted sites. They offer a site for Jewish singles, Silver singles, Black singles, Latter Day Saint singles and Christian singles.

Now if none of those sites floats your boat Try 100 best dating sites. Somebody has taken the time to compile a great list. There are definitely some very strange criteria for love these days! Everything from inmates to animal lovers.

I found more! Overweightdate.com for "large lovers and the men and women who love them". Here at least people can be honest about what they look like and who they are.

PlentyofFish.com claims to be the largest free dating service. They also claim to have created the worlds most advanced matching system. On the front page of the site, they have an 82-year-old woman and 27-year-old woman. So there is definitely diversity.

If you and your cat live together try Datemypet.com where you post a picture of yourself and one of your pet. Maybe you will both find true love or at last someone to take long walks on the beach with.

If your type is Abby or McGee on NCIS then I found the place for you also. It's Geek 2 geek.

I also discovered Farmersonly.com; you guessed it, for farmers only. Not many listings for New England! First month is free!

If you want to check someone out before dating begins you can go to mymatchchecker.com, which will do a background check for a fee.
