4-Year-Old Girl Recovering After Guardrail Impales Car In Northbridge Crash

NORTHBRIDGE (CBS) – A crash in Northbridge Tuesday morning sent a guardrail through a car, leaving a 4-year-old girl with life-threatening injuries. Looking at the photos, by all accounts it's amazing everyone survived the crash especially the girl who was in a carseat in the back.

"When I saw those pictures of the car, it's a miracle. It's a miracle to God they are all alive," said neighbor Carol Carr.

Northbridge police said Amanda Brown was driving her husband, David, and his daughter in their Chevy Impala on Fowler Road Tuesday morning when they crashed.

Joe Kessler, Jr. and his dad ran to help. "I heard people screaming, and I called 911," said Joe Kessler.

Police said the stepmom swerved to avoid an animal running across the road and hit the guardrail.

"Guardrail went through the headlight, through the firewall, through the dash, caught the father in the shoulder, on the way out through the back window caught the little girl on the head," said neighbor Ed Carr.

Police said the car's frame likely saved the little girl's life by pushing the guardrail away by a couple of inches.

"Caused the guardrail to ricochet in an upward direction," said Northbridge Police Lt. Timothy Labrie.

For the Carr's who live next to the three and consider them family, the accident is eerie.

"The father was telling me the other day she was sitting out here and the life-flight helicopter went by and she said to him, 'I want to ride in that.' But, I mean what a way to ride in it," said Ed Carr.

They are convinced it was more than the Chevy's frame that saved the family.

"All the windows broke except for the one where the little girl was sitting," said Ed Carr. "The EMTs and the police said there must have been an angel in the car because they all survived."

Police said the stepmother was released from the hospital; the father underwent surgery and is still in the hospital. Police say the 4-year old underwent surgery and is doing better.
