NH Student Says Teacher Humiliated Her For Protesting Pledge

BOSTON (CBS) - A New Hampshire teenager is demanding an apology after she says she was humiliated by a teacher for protesting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Fatima Smart says in March she exercised her right to stay seated during the Pledge of Allegiance.

Smart says her teacher then humiliated her, kicking her out of the classroom for ten minutes and then lecturing her in front of the rest of the students.

Smart and her mother say they've been trying to meet with administrators from Monadnock Regional Middle-High School since then, but the school will only say it is handling the matter in its own way.

"When you're just asking to sit down and have the teacher and the student come to terms with each other just so that there can be peace in the school and they don't want to cooperate, what else are you going to do but fight?" Kerry Boscarino, Fatima's mother said.

"To me the flag salute represents our government and I don't like our government," Fatima says. "I just disagree with everything they do."

The school says no laws were broken and it does not comment on issues involving faculty members.

Smart is finishing the school year at home and she will take classes at a charter school next fall.
