1 Dead After Sailboat, Power Boat Collide Off Newport, RI

NEWPORT, R.I. (CBS) -- A woman died after a sailboat and a powerboat collided off Newport, Rhode Island Sunday. The Coast Guard was called to the scene around 2:45 p.m.

The 60-year-old crew member of a two-person catamaran sailboat was thrown into the water by the crash, the RI Department of Environmental Management said.

She was recovered from the water unconscious but was later pronounced dead.

The RI DEM also said the woman was in the area to race in New England 100 Regatta.

Alcohol is not considered a fact but the crash is still under investigation.
