'Miracle Messages' Aim To Reunite Homeless With Loved Ones

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) - He has a unique and life changing mission, to reunite homeless people with family and friends lost to them somewhere along the way. He calls it "Miracle Messages," recording short videos and using social media to bring people together.

We shadowed Kevin Adler today as he met people on the streets of Cambridge. Julia lives in a group home now, but has been homeless, and Gregory has been on and off the streets for 10 years. Kevin recorded Miracle Messages with both of them, Julia to her son she hasn't seen in 10 years, and Gregory to his brother he hasn't heard from in more than 30 years.

"The direct hope is to try and reunite homeless individuals with their long lost loved ones," says Adler.

Kevin makes the recordings and posts them on YouTube and other social media.

"I think we all respect each other and treat each other differently if we see someone as someone's son or daughter, brother, sister, mother or father," Adler says.

He started the project in San Francisco, where he lives, to honor his uncle.

"My uncle Mark was homeless, lived on and off the streets for 30 years, suffered from schizophrenia. But I never saw him as a homeless man," he says.

Kevin is traveling through New England making his recordings, and sometimes his faith is rewarded. Several people have found each other by watching the videos.

"That is enormous gratification, to have a homeless individual and their family sitting there together who otherwise hadn't been in touch for 30 years, say thank you for giving us our family back," Adler says.

On this road trip Kevin's goal is to reunite 100 people with their loved ones. He also wants to find people to help expand the work.
