BOSTON (CBS) -- A man has stepped up to replace the money taken from Dana Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic collection boxes. "As Mr. Rogers would say…'look for the helpers.' Today our helper was Michael, a marine who heard about the theft of all the money collected in our Dinosaur banks," Director of Patient and Family Program Lisa Scherber wrote on Facebook.
The banks sit outside the Jimmy Fund Clinic on Binney Street. Last week, a man allegedly emptied the purple dinosaur of its bills twice. At least one of the banks was broken in the process.
"With tears in [Michael's] eyes, he gave me a handful of cash. 'This should cover what was taken from the dinosaurs.' Yes Michael, it more than covers the funds we lost, and it makes all of us who work everyday at The Jimmy Fund clinic feel like our hearts are overflowing," Scherber wrote.
Donations in the dinosaur banks go directly to the kids.
Scherber also spoke with WBZ-TV. "We're going to plan something really amazing because of Michael and that's going to make us feel really special. The dinosaur money goes directly to the kids, whether it's an ice cream day or cookies or we have this upcoming zoo week where every day is a different animal."
She said she and Michael were a bit emotional as he dropped off his donation.
"I just knew from that moment that he was a difference-maker," Scherber said. "I want his face to be everywhere and not the young person who had a really bad day and decided to take the funds from the Jimmy Fund kids."
"I just think there are a million more Michaels out there, and I think he represents everything good in this world. And we really needed that on that Friday."
