Man Enters Whitman Recreation Center With Baseball Bat

WHITMAN (CBS) – Whitman police are looking for a man who entered a recreation center and smashed a car windshield with a baseball bat in a nearby parking lot after leaving.

Police said that Tuesday at about 8 p.m. a 911 caller reported a man wearing a long coat carrying a baseball bat had walked into the Cardinal Spellman Center where several children were attending CCD classes.

A teacher confronted the man and asked if he needed assistance, police said. The man then walked into the gymnasium where there were about 20 children.

While in the gym, police said the man uttered profanities and left the building.

After walking out of the center, the man allegedly smashed the windshield of a car in the parking lot and drove off in a dark-colored sedan with a moon roof.

Police also suspect the same man of entering the Holy Ghost Church earlier in the evening.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s or 50s who is about 6'2" with salt and pepper hair, balding with rectangular framed glasses.

Anyone with information on the man is asked to call Det. Mark Poirier of the Whitman Police Department at (781) 447-1212.
