Keller @ Large: Expect The Unexpected
BOSTON (CBS) - Remember the asteroid caught on tape as it exploded over Russia back in 2013?
One more than 100 times as big will streak past earth on Halloween night. And up to a couple of weeks ago it wasn't even on anyone's radar.
They're calling it a trick-or-treat surprise, "Halloween's asteroid flyby." It may be close to 2,000 feet wide. And while the experts say it poses no threat to earth, you gotta wonder - how did something that big escape detection until just recently?
Then again, you could ask the same question about gas prices, now dipping well under two bucks a gallon. Who knew global oil supplies would boom and demand would slump?
If you did, chances are you're now very rich.
We expect the unexpected from sports, but if you had Malcolm Butler picked as our Super Bowl hero, your assistance with my fantasy football team is requested.
Nobody saw the Donald Trump phenomenon coming, and few saw it lasting. Could this be a blow-dried asteroid heading straight for Washington DC?
And brace yourself for this one - braces have become an unexpected tween fashion trend. Disconcerting? Maybe.
But let's look on the bright side. The asteroid may be arriving on short notice, but it'll miss us by 300,000 miles. A surprise break on gas prices and an unexpected super bowl win? Always welcome.
And maybe we can learn from all this that life doesn't always lend itself to easy forecasting.
Just ask my esteemed colleagues in the weather center.
