Jones On Super Bowl: Coaching Was Patriots Biggest Advantage
BOSTON (CBS) - 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones and Joe Murray had a discussion Tuesday night about how the most important matchup in Sunday's Super Bowl proved to be between coaches Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll.
"There was no way, zero chance, that Bill Belichick was going to get outcoached by Pete Carroll," said Jones.
Jones spoke about how the Patriots were content at slowly working their way down the field on Seattle's defense, which rarely gives up big plays. Of the 88 quarterbacks to play in a Super Bowl, only six had a lesser mark than Brady's 8.6 yards per completion. The six quarterbacks with a lower figure than Brady all lost.
"It's not to say they didn't have any big plays, but for the most part they took what was there which was underneath throws," said Jones.
Running back Shane Vareen was a pivotal piece in the Patriots short passing game, catching 11 passes including five for first downs. Jones pointed out that while the Patriots adjusted to what Seattle's defense gave them, Seattle never made any changes to stop Brady from orchestrating long drives.
"Bill Belichick, when he's facing a team in the postseason for the first time, he's never lost. He has that game plan ready to go," said Jones.
