Johnston & Flynn With Karen Guregian: What The Sanders Release Means

NFL teams have to have their rosters cut down to 80 players by Tuesday and the Patriots started to make their cuts Monday.

On Monday, the Pats released wide receivers Tyree Barnes and Darnell Jenkins and running back Eric Kettani. The name that caught people by surprise, though, was safety James Sanders, who was also cut.

Johnston & Flynn, filling in for Toucher & Rich, spoke with Karen Guregian from the Boston Herald about the Sanders move and the final 53 man roster. Was Guregian surprised by the release of Sanders?

"Sanders isn't the best safety on the planet, but he does provide a measure of stability. He's kind of the security blanket for a guy like a Meriweather, who isn't the most secure safety, and he's solid. He's a veteran and he doesn't necessarily hurt you when he's out there. So yeah, I was a little surprised," said Guregian.

Guregian then went on to discuss the release of Sanders and whether it puts more pressure on Brandon Meriweather or Patrick Chung.

They went on to talk about the final 53 man roster that will come later this week. What is the biggest competition right now to just make the roster or secure a starting position on this Patriots team?

They also talked about how the team let James Sanders know that he was cut, which led Flynn to tell some stories about how players were cut from teams that he played on. That and so much more with Karen Guregian from the Boston Herald.
