Residents Escape Safely From Hyde Park House Fire
BOSTON (CBS) – Several people, including a woman and her young granddaughter, escaped safely after a fire broke out at a multi-family Hyde Park home.
Flames were spotted just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday on Austin Street in the back of a 2-family home.
Several firefighters happened to be near the house working on a fire call box when they saw smoke.
Multiple residents were inside when the first started, including a woman who was watching her toddler-aged granddaughter.
"She told me 'There's a fire, oh my god, oh my god there's a fire I'm freaking out,'" the toddler's mother told WBZ-TV's Christina Hager about the phone call she received when the house caught fire. "I just told her to grab my daughter and get out of the house as quickly as you can."
The fire reached four alarms before it was knocked down.
Boston Fire Department officials estimate the damage at around $250,000.
Two adults and four children were displaced by the blaze.
"I'm just happy everyone is OK," the toddler's mother said.
