Hyannis Man Wearing Selfie Hat Charged With Stealing Jewelry

HYANNIS (CBS) -- A man wearing a winter hat with the word "selfie" spelled out in large, bold lettering has been charged with stealing about $10,000 worth of jewelry from a Kmart in Hyannis late Thursday night.

James Anderson, 65, was arrested around 11 p.m. after he allegedly cut the security wires from a jewelry display case at the store on Iyannough Road, according to the Barnstable Police Facebook page.

Police say he left the store with gold jewelry in a shopping cart. Investigators were able to get a description of the suspect and the vehicle he drove away in from store surveillance video.

An officer later stopped Anderson's vehicle on Main Street, and he was still wearing the same black-and-white hat worn inside the store, police say. Anderson was allegedly in possession of wire cutters and several pieces of jewelry that still had price tags on them.

Anderson has been charged with larceny over $250 and possession of burglarious tools.

Police said Anderson has had several dozen adult arraignments on breaking and entering, theft, shoplifting and drug-related charges.

The Hyannis man was held on $540 cash bail. He is expected to be arraigned Friday in Barnstable District Court.
