Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui, Irvin, Bennett Fined For Super Bowl Fight
BOSTON (CBS) -- In the closing seconds of the Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks refused to go down without a fight. Literally -- they started a fight.
The on-field fracas following a Tom Brady kneeldown did not reflect too well on the Seahawks, but members of Seattle's team were not the only ones fined for involvement in the fight.
On Friday, the NFL announced fines to Seattle's Bruce Irvin and Michael Bennett as well as New England's Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui.
Irvin received a $10,000 fine, while the other three players were all issued fines of $8,268.
Those fines aren't likely to ruin the celebratory week of the two Patriots too much, and Gronkowski himself didn't even feel the need to proclaim his innocence in the scuffle.
"All of a sudden, they went hard at us, and then I got pushed or something, and I was like -- screw it, last game of the year, I'm throwing some haymakers,'" Gronkowski said on Jimmy Kimmel Live after the game.
Irvin, for his part, apologized via Twitter.
The Patriots beat the Seahawks 28-24 in Super Bowl XLIX. The fight came on the second-to-last play of the game, moments after Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson to shockingly stop the Seahawks from scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute. On the play that followed the interception, Bennett jumped offside, moving the Patriots from inside their own 1-yard line out to the 6-yard line. Irvin was ejected from the game for his role in the fight.
