Uxbridge School Athletic Center Dedicated In Memory Of Holy Cross Rower Grace Rett

UXBRIDGE (CBS) -- Two years and one day after her tragic death, a new gymnasium opens to honor Grace Rett. The Holy Cross rower was killed in a van accident during a team trip to Florida in January of 2020.

On Sunday, family and friends came together at Our Lady of the Valley Regional School, in Uxbridge. Rett, and her sister Brianne Rett, attended the school as kids.

"She was a light everywhere she went. Strong in academics, fearless in competition for athletics, and had a great faith overall," said Brianne Rett.

Grace's mother was also there for the opening of the new facility.

"It's the rainbow after the storm, I guess," said Mary Jo Rett. "It means everything to us to see it completed."

The Grace Rhett Athletic Complex and Education Center, aptly called The GRACE Center, will host gym classes, games, and other educational activities.

The center was built by the fundraising efforts of Rett's rowing teammates and community donations.

Rett's memory and accomplishments line the walls of this building.

Less than a week before her death, Grace set a world record by rowing 62 consecutive hours.

Her sister Brianne, said the center serves as a reminder of Grace's spirit.

"It feels great," said Brianne. "I really feel her presence here through all the community members that came and through everything in the gym that reminds me of her."
