Former NFLer Brandon Magee Joins Red Sox Spring Training
BOSTON (CBS) -- Brandon Magee was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday night, but it didn't take him long to continue his athletic career.
He just had to change sports in order to do so.
Magee traded in his helmet and shoulder pads for a bat and glove, joining the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers, Florida on Wednesday.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity they gave me at the time. Right now, I'm focused on spring training," Magee told the Tampa Bay Times Wednesday as he made his way to the Red Sox spring training complex.
Magee, a four-year member of both the varsity baseball and football teams at Centennial High School in Corona, California, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays out of high school, but chose to play football at Arizona State instead. He recorded 231 tackles during his career with the Sun Devils, and also helped the ASU baseball team reach the College World Series twice.
He went undrafted in the 2013 NFL draft and signed with the Dallas Cowboys, but was cut before the end of training camp.
Before signing with the Buccaneers last season, he worked out with the Red Sox in extended spring training as an outfielder.
Magee had six special teams tackles for the Buccaneers last season before landing on the injured reserve in December.
