Daily Talker: Brookline Book Controversy
A social studies book for 5th graders at Brookline Public Schools is causing a lot of controversy among parents this morning. The debate centers on a particular page where the text suggests some slave owners living during the 17th-century America were compassionate toward their slaves. The passage in question states, "slaves were treated well or cruelly depending on their owners." Some parents told WBZ that the passage downplayed of the lives of enslaved people, and even put a good face on the issue. Others feel it is simply inaccurate. Schools leaders first agreed not to have that excerpt of the book available for lessons, but kept the book in use. It wasn't until WBZ took the concerns of parents directly to leaders that the book was then pulled entirely. What do you think? How do you feel about Brookline Public Schools pulling this book due to the passage on slavery?
