Daily Talker: Boycotting The Oscars

Two big celebrities are calling for a boycott of the Academy Awards. Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee announced that they will not attend the Oscars this year because all of the nominees are once again white.

Smith, whose husband Will Smith did not receive a nomination for his critically acclaimed role in "Concussion," posted a message on Facebook explaining why she won't be attending. She said, "Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power. And we are a dignified people and we are powerful." She urged all people of color to help make change by putting resources into their own communities. Her video has been viewed more than 7 million times.

Director Spike Lee wrote on Instagram that he will also be skipping the Academy Awards, but thanked the Academy for giving him an honorary Oscar.

A 2012 study by the Los Angeles Times found the Academy is overwhelmingly white and male. When the Oscar nominations were announced last week, the Academy President acknowledged that she was "disappointed" that all 20 acting nominees were again white. Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a new statement Monday night promising more diversity and quickly. Isaacs said dramatic steps will be taken to alter the makeup of our membership.

What do you think? Are the nominations fair? Will a boycott help bring about change?
