Curious About Torn Aorta
BOSTON (CBS) -- Richard Holbrooke died after having surgery Saturday to repair a tear in his aorta. I'm curious- how did he tear his aorta? Is it something that is easy to do? In what ways can you tear your aorta? - Cindy, Charlton
While we don't know the particulars of Mr. Holbrooke's case, we do know that every year about 10,000 Americans experience a life threatening tear in their aorta, which is the largest artery in the body.
The major causes of the tear are high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. Smokers also face a higher risk. Accidents cause the damage as well.
When the aorta tears it causes serious internal bleeding. The problem effects more men than women.
The Mayo Clinic explains it better than I can.
