Two Killed After Utility Truck Topples Over In Bourne
BOURNE (CBS) – Two electrical contractors were killed on the job after a utility truck they were working in flipped over while they were more than 150 feet in the air.
Police said the utility workers from MassBay Electrical Corp. were doing maintenance work on a power line at the Cape Cod Aggregate Corp., a sand and gravel pit in Bourne.
The truck was very close to a deep embankment when the boom collapsed with the two workers inside the truck's bucket about 150 feet up. They then fell another 75 feet down the embankment and died as the truck flipped straight into the air.
"I lost my son today and I love him," John Loughran, father of John Loughran Jr., told WBZ-TV's Paul Burton as he fought back tears.
Loughran's co-worker was identified by the Boston Globe as Joseph L. Boyd III of Fall River,
"He was at the top of that tower and he loved line work. He loved being a utility worker. He was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing today. He couldn't have been happier," John Loughran said of his son.
Co-workers who were on scene were in a state of shock.
"They are very shaken up. They knew the men who were killed and are pretty distraught," Bourne Fire Department Chaplain Glenn Stone said.
Other members of Loughran's family, one of them a state trooper, embraced in tears at the scene as investigators looked to determine the cause of the accident.
"He was a wonderful kid and I going to miss him terribly and I love him," the elder Loughran said.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, state police and the Cape and Island District Attorney's office are investigating the accident.
