Convoy Of First Responders Travels To Fenway Park In 'Unprecedented' Show Of Support
BOSTON (CBS) -- Fifty ambulances traveled from Worcester's UMass Medical Center to Boston's Fenway Park Wednesday in a show of appreciation for paramedics, EMTs and 911 dispatchers. It's all part of a local celebration of National EMS Week.
The "Convoy of Champions" departed Worcester at 1:15 p.m. and was escorted along the Massachusetts Turnpike by State Police with lights flashing.
At Fenway, there was a flyover from two medical helicopters. Gov. Charlie Baker, Mayor Marty Walsh and Attorney General Maura Healey shared video tributes to those in the EMS field.
"Today's event is unprecedented. We've never had this type of statewide recognition for our personnel," said Dennis Cataldo, president of Cataldo Ambulance.
The ambulances even made their way onto the field, where they lined the warning track.
"I think it is a big boost. People are working very hard and they generally do it without a lot of fanfare," said Joe O'Hare of Boston EMS.
