Clay Buchholz's Red Sox Career Could Be Over Soon - And He Knows It

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox appear set with their five-man rotation for the time being, and Clay Buchholz is not part of it.

In light of the Red Sox trading for Padres All-Star Drew Pomeranz and Eduardo Rodriguez possibly seizing a role at the back of the rotation with his strong outing on Saturday, Buchholz seems aware that he could be on the move as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.

"The way I've always looked at it is this team is run as a business," Buchholz told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "They're going to do everything they can if it's going to make them better, and if that involves moving me somewhere, that's what it is. I don't have any control over that."

With Joe Kelly set to pitch out of the bullpen upon returning and at least four rotation spots sewn up at the moment, there does not appear to be a regular role for Buchholz on the pitching staff. ESPN's Buster Olney speculated on the Sunday Night Baseball broadcast that Theo Epstein's Chicago Cubs may be a trade partner for Buchholz's services.

Buchholz is 3-9 with a 5.91 ERA in 2016 and has posted an 18-27 record with a 4.82 ERA in 64 appearances since his excellent but injury-shortened 2013 season. He is signed through the current season for $13 million with a club option for $13.5 million in 2017 and does not have a no-trade clause.
