Barnstable Man Recovering After He Was Shot By Hunter

BARNSTABLE (CBS) – A Barnstable man says he is lucky to be alive after he was accidentally shot by a hunter Monday night.

"Two or three more inches and we might not be having this conversation right now," Jonathan Way told WBZ-TV's Bill Shields. "I was lucky. I wasn't lucky to get shot, but I was lucky where it went."

Way was struck by pellets in both hands and his upper back.

The shooting happened near Mary Dunn Road in Barnstable. The hunter, 47-year-old Sean Houle, was arrested at the scene and appeared in Barnstable District Court on Tuesday.

He was hunting with what police call a black powder gun, almost like a musket. He fired two shots and then heard the victim scream out, 'stop I've been hit.'

"I felt something and obviously heard the bang and said 'holy cow this is actually hitting me' so I dove to the ground and made a yelling noise," Way said.

Houle faces several charges, including unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a firearm and careless or negligent use of a weapon causing injury. Bail for Houle was set at $4,000.
