Brockton Woman Charged In Connection With Boyfriend's Murder

BROCKTON (CBS) – A woman has been arrested after a Brockton man was found dead inside a closet with multiple stab wounds Friday night.

Kathryn Podgurski, 33, was arrested Saturday on one count of accessory after murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend, 44-year-old Joseph Shaw.

Just after 10:30 p.m., Podgurski flagged down police and directed them to her third-floor apartment on Green Street, where officers found Shaw's body.

When they arrived, what they saw was "gruesome." Shaw's body was in a closet and the Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz says the body had been there for a while.

"The brockton police found a 44 year old male victim, deceased and in an apartment where he lived. It appears he had been dead for a period of time and had suffered trauma," Cruz said.

Cruz adds that Shaw suffered from "multiple, severe stab wounds."

"We believe this is not a random incident and we do not believe there is a threat to public safety," Cruz told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Even though authorities say the incident may not be random, Shaw's sister Sandra says she can't understand a crime like this.

"It's heartbreaking. I don't know if he suffered. I don't know who would do such a horrific crime. I mean why would you take? For what? What are you getting out of taking a life? That I don't understand," Sandra said.

Sandra told WBZ-TV that the apartment belonged to Shaw and not to Podgurski. She also said that Shaw and Podgurski were not boyfriend and girlfriend.

Shaw had been reported missing on Monday, and it appears his body was inside the apartment for at least several days.

The investigation into Shaw's death remains "active and ongoing."

Podgurski is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Brockton District Court.
