Bristol County D.A. Sam Sutter Elected Mayor Of Fall River

FALL RIVER (CBS) - There's a new mayor in Fall River.

Mayor Will Flanagan conceded a mayoral recall election Tuesday night to Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter.

Sutter's office is currently prosecuting Aaron Hernandez in the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. Jury selection begins next month.

According to the Fall River Herald News, Flanagan will stay in office until Sutter's election is qualified on December 26.

Sutter will serve the rest of Flanagan's term until November.

It's not clear what impact, if any, Sutter's election will have on the Hernandez trial.

Sutter was one of seven challengers in a two-part vote. Flanagan, who was serving his third term, finished second.

Flanagan had two chances in Tuesday's special election - avoid recall and be elected again as mayor. He lost on both counts. The recall vote passed by a better than 2-to-1 margin.

Sutter ended up with 37-percent of the vote. Flanagan had about 27-percent.

Nearly 33-percent of Fall River voters came to the polls Tuesday.

The recall focused on fire department layoffs and a city councilor's allegation that Flanagan had tried to intimidate him by showing a gun. Flanagan maintains that never happened.
