Bridgewater State Students Rally For Attack Victim

BRIDGEWATER (CBS) - Hundreds of Bridgewater State University students staged an on-campus rally in support of a student journalist Tuesday afternoon.

"I know there is hate and ignorance in the world, but that doesn't mean we have to accept it, " said Kayla Cummings, one of the organizers.

Destinie Mogg-Barkalow claims she was punched in the face by a woman last Thursday over a student newspaper editorial she wrote in support of same-sex marriage.

In her piece, she called people in favor of the overturned gay marriage ban in California, "intolerant and bigoted."

Mogg-Barkalow, who is a lesbian, was at the rally but didn't speak.

Her father, a professor at Bridgewater State, said she is grateful for the support.

"We will not accept that kind of behavior here, " said university President Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria. "We will find them, and let them know they do not belong here."

Sketches of the man and woman who attacked her were released Monday, but there have been no arrests.
