Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade Returns For First Time Since 2019
BOSTON (CBS) — Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade returned Saturday after a two-year hiatus. With all the fanfare and confetti, the 2022 Saint Patrick's Day Parade in South Boston was back with thunderous applause.
From the bagpipes to the Irish step dancers the feel and flavor of the Irish reached fever pitch. Governor Charlie Baker and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu helped kick off the parade.
"It's especially meaningful this year given how many people have looked forward to this, you can tell by the size of the crowd how important this day is," said Gov. Charlie Baker.
The crowds young and old filled sidewalks were ten rows deep while others cheered from their windows.
"So honored to see our residents and visitors from all across the Commonwealth here, celebrating Boston, one of the very important traditions to our city, what the story of Irish immigrants to this country meant still resonates today," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.
This parade draws in hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world. Irish hats, flags, carnations, costumes, and music brought color and laughter.
"I am here because I live in Southie and the start of the pandemic right on Dorchester St. and I've missed the parade every year so I'm happy to be here finally," a woman said.
It's been a long two years because of the pandemic but with each passing float and the perfect weather conditions, this crowd was taking it all in with great appreciation and enthusiasm.
"I missed this so much I am so glad it's back," a man said.
