Boston Police officer shot in Dorchester, saved by vest, suspect in custody
BOSTON - A Boston police officer was shot in Dorchester Monday night and a suspect has been arrested. The officer was struck in his bulletproof vest and is expected to be OK.
The shooting happened on Esmond Street at about 9:30 p.m. Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said officers responded to the area after receiving a 911 call for a person with a gun.
"As officers approached, the suspect actually fired one round, hitting the officer in the chest," Cox said. "The other officers were able to arrest the suspect."
Cox said a gun was recovered after the suspect was arrested.
The officer was taken to Boston Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. "Thankfully, he is going to be OK," Cox said. "This is another heroic act by our police officers doing a very, very difficult job."
The officer who was shot has been with the department for approximately two years, Cox said. His name has not been released.
The suspect, who has not been identified, will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Tuesday.
